There’s a common misconception that lingers in birth spaces. “Doulas are only for unmedicated, natural births”. That if you’re planning an epidural, or if your plans change along the way, a doula somehow becomes unnecessary. We want to gently reassure you: that simply isn’t the case. Your birth experience is not defined by whether or not you receive pain medication. Support doesn’t become less important just because you choose an epidural. As doulas, our role is not to guide you toward a specific kind of birth. Our role is to support you, no matter what path your labor takes.

Preparing for birth isn't just about preparing your body; it’s also about preparing your mind too. In the quiet moments where you’re sitting, taking a breath, thinking, and picturing your strength in that moment, you’re doing more than just relaxing. You’re building trust in yourself and learning how to stay grounded when things feel super overwhelming and uncertain. You’re building confidence in yourself for what’s ahead. Know that birth isn’t always predictable, and that’s okay, and these moments are shaping how you respond when you feel overwhelmed. The connection that you build with your mind and body can help guide you through your journey and support you to stay calm and prepared. 

After pregnancy your body tells a story, a story of change, growth, and a lot of deep strengths. But it's not always such an easy journey to accept. You can feel so much love, discomfort, and uncertainty all at the same time. In a world that pushes certain expectations and standards, many mothers can feel lost and out of place, especially carrying a heavy mental load and not liking what they see in the mirror. Mothers can go through so many emotional shifts that are kept quiet and not talked about enough. Having self compassion helps to heal and reconnect yourself with your body to see it as something to care and love for not to fix. 

We’re told that postpartum healing has a timeline that has a smooth journey and a “back to normal” feeling. But real healing after birth looks different for every parent. It can be overwhelming, stressful, and so beautiful all at once. Postpartum recovery holds both strength and struggle, often at the same time. When expectations don’t match reality, it doesn’t mean you’re failing or doing it wrong, it just means that you are human. This is a reminder that your healing doesn’t have to look or be perfect for your process and experiences to be valid.
